The water laps at his ankles. The violet water broken by shards of light, dancing and shifting. A large ripple expands and feels like it keeps moving and will shatter the edge of the frame. I was looking for a feeling from memory where I was so absorbed by a physical sensation, by a feeling that was so overwhelming that all other thoughts and ideas disappeared. I thought back and recalled a moment of crossing a river, trousers pulled up and feeling like if I could get to the other side some magic might happen. It seems so simple, yet also so wonderful. I think many of us are like that. If we encounter a river then there is some incredible urge to get across. And yet, it was the actual walking through water, the cleansing feeling, the sharp cold and the sensation of being between states. I was trying to convey this experience of adventure, of discovery and getting lost within nature.

I wonder sometimes, why it’s so beautiful and painful and necessary to draw on images and feelings of childhood and growing up. I think it’s a sense that it’s something we have all done and all been through. A sense that something that past that it is lost forever and also that something that is gone is more magical than ever.
